So much of what we do today is online, so the concept of a ‘digital detox’ is intriguing Gen Z and millennials more than ever. Defined as intentionally stepping away from smartphones and screens to re-engage with the real world, especially in the midst of “burn-out culture” dominating the younger generation, digital detoxing is no longer a niche wellness trend – it’s becoming a movement.
A wave of tech-free retreats where guests surrender their devices in favour of peace and nature a la The White Lotus have been on the rise, and according to the 2025 Hilton Trends Report, 24% of travellers power down and turn off social media during their holidays more than they used to, as well as limiting time on digital devices more than they used to on holiday. Digital detox experiences are helping people rediscovering mindfulness, reconnecting with themselves, and quite literally “touching grass”.
The digital savvy Gen Z are online nearly all the time, yet data and media are showing a slow but sure growing pushback. TikTok, ironically, has 51.2 k posts under the hashtag ‘digital detox’, proving the craving for unplugged living is real. More people are heading outdoors to experience life beyond the scroll, whether it is camping, running, or even orienteering, which has seen a rise in popularity across the UK and Europe according to Tom Hollowell, president of the International Orienteering Federation.
