Study reveals the best European cities to explore the outdoors

Stockholm, Sweden is the second-best place in Europe for fitness fanatics, boasting 51 walks per 100,000 people

As the weather gets warmer and we head into Spring, many people want to upgrade their exercise regimes in time for warmer days and beach trips. Whether you live abroad or are heading off on holiday, which are the best European cities for fitness fanatics?

To find out, Betway Sport has conducted new research, analysing 30 of the most populated European cities to determine which is the best place for those who like to stay active. The research looked at several factors, including the price of monthly gym memberships, the number of walking and running routes, the quality of air and green space, and the number of sunshine hours in each city.

Lisbon, Portugal is the best city in Europe for those who like to stay active and get outdoors, with 2,799 sunshine hours per year 

Lisbon has ranked as the number one city in Europe for those who like to stay active, particularly those who like to exercise in nature. 

The Portuguese city sees around 2,799 hours of sunshine each year — the most of any European city analysed. The air quality (79) and green spaces (70) in Lisbon are also rated relatively high, meaning people can make the most of being outdoors.

In second place is Stockholm in Sweden. The city boasts high green space quality (86) and has 51 walking and running routes per 100,000 people, which is the most of any European city analysed, making it the perfect place for walkers and runners. 

The third best European city for exercising is Vienna, Austria, with its green spaces given a quality score of 84 out of 100

Rounding off the top three best cities in Europe for fitness fanatics is Vienna, Austria. Air quality in the city is just slightly lower than in Stockholm, with a score of 83, while its green spaces have been given a quality score of 84. 

There may be only nine walks to choose from per every 100,000 residents, but the city does see 1,930 hours of sunshine each year.
