Nature and Adventure on Prescription

GP and Author Dr Jack Mosley to present at 5th Anniversary of UK’s Leading Green Social Prescribing Summit

NatureMind 2026: 5-6th Oct 2026, Castleton, Peak District.

NatureMind is the annual UK summit exploring the latest research and best practice in nature-based social prescribing for physical and mental health – the natural health service. Now in its fifth year, the non-profit summit is coordinated by mental health charity Mind Over Mountains and the University of Lancashire and will pose the question ‘Nature & Adventure on Prescription – if you were running the wider health service tomorrow, what would you do?’

Dr Jack Mosley, son of the late TV doctor, is an NHS GP, Sunday Times bestselling author and champion of the therapeutic power of nature, exercise, mindfulness and open mental health discussions. He will be presenting and taking part in panel discussions alongside leading policy makers and practitioners from the sector.

The evidence is growing that spending time being active in nature is good for mental and physical health. Reported outcomes of green social prescription include improvements in mental wellbeing, physical health, loneliness & isolation and confidence & resilience. The latest data from Mind Over Mountains shows that it is also a practical, preventative and cost-effective response to the pressures facing our health and care systems with a social value of £10-13 generated for every £1 invested in its walks and retreats programmes.

Talking about the benefits of green social prescribing in a medical setting, Dr Jack Mosley said:

“Although therapy and antidepressants can be really helpful for depression and anxiety, they don’t work for everyone. In depression, around half of people don’t achieve a substantial improvement with their initial treatment. People suffering from burnout, high stress levels, or a difficult life event also need support that addresses the issues they’re facing.

“In general practice we are somewhat limited by what we can offer. Yet mental health is complex, and medication or therapy may be only part of what someone needs.

What I think is fantastic about green prescribing, particularly Mind Over Mountains, is that it combines so many factors that are so fantastic for improving our mental health: getting out into nature, mindfulness, exercise, counselling and of course, social connection. This is not a replacement for medication or therapy, when needed, but offers people several ways to support their wellbeing, alongside their usual care.

“Many of us live in concrete jungles. Yet, studies show that even a short time in nature can help us feel calmer and lift our mood. More frequent and longer trips into the natural world are that much better.”

Talking about this year’s 5th anniversary of NatureMinds, CEO of Mind Over Mountains, Ian Boyd, said:

“Following the recent publication of new guidance for practitioners of green social prescribing, now is a critical time to build on the momentum of the last five years and turn growing recognition of the benefits into wider access and funding.

“Our theme this year is ‘Radical Hope’. We’re asking a bold but practical question: if we were running the health service tomorrow, how would we put nature and adventure at the heart of supporting people’s mental and physical health?

“We want this summit to turn that ambition into action: bringing practitioners, researchers and decision-makers together to share what works, challenge what holds us back and build the partnerships that make change possible. Our goal is for more people to access the right support in nature when they need it, regardless of their circumstances.”
