Seven Essentials to Pack for a Safe Hike This National Walking Month

Having the right equipment while hiking improves safety, offers protection, and increases the chances of rescue - making navigation tools, emergency gear, and proper clothing essential

This May marks National Walking Month, and hikers are being urged to pack essential gear to stay safe and be prepared as they explore the UK’s scenic trails and rugged landscapes.

Safety and survival whistle experts at ACME Whistles have revealed the seven essential items every adventurer should pack to stay safe while out walking in  this summer.

In 2024, mountain rescue teams in England and Wales were called out every day, with Scotland seeing over 1,000 callouts for the first time- marking a record surge in emergencies.

Many of these incidents are caused by ill-prepared hikers influenced by social media posts of beauty spots that are hard to navigate, highlighting the urgent need to remind everyone of the crucial equipment and preparation required before hitting the trails.

Having the right equipment while hiking improves safety, offers protection, and increases the chances of rescue – making navigation tools, emergency gear, and proper clothing essential.

Ben Mcfarlane, expert from ACME Whistles, said: “National Walking Month is the perfect excuse to get outside and explore- but before you set off on a hiking adventure, it’s important to research the route and pack the right gear.

“On sunny days and with social media glorifying difficult routes, hikers may overlook the challenging nature of certain terrains, which can lead to unexpected incidents, so being prepared is vital- especially with mountain rescue incidents on the rise.

“While the correct clothing and reliable navigation tools like a map or a fully charged phone with offline access are considered essentials, it’s often the smaller, easily forgotten items that can make a big difference in an emergency – especially if you’re injured or lose your way; like a survival whistle or headlamp.”

Top essential items to pack for a safe hike:

  1. Clothing:

Whatever the season, pack a waterproof jacket, warm layers, gloves, and spare socks just in case of changing weather. In sunnier months, add sunglasses, a wide-brim hat, and breathable long sleeves. Supportive hiking boots with good grip are also a must.

  1. First aid kid:

Carrying a first-aid kit is essential when hiking, as unpredictable conditions can increase the risk of injury. While it may not address every medical need, a well-stocked kit can manage minor injuries and offer initial care for more serious situations until professional help arrives, preventing further complications.

  1. Whistle:

A whistle is a reliable, battery-free tool that can signal for help in emergencies. Its distress signals, like the alpine signal or SOS, can quickly attract rescue teams and save lives.

  1. Navigation tools:

Many now rely on apps that lack detail or offline access, often unaware of the risks this brings. To avoid getting lost, learn to read a paper map or use a reliable offline app, but always carry a portable charger in case your device dies.

  1. Food and drink

Packing food and extra snacks helps maintain energy levels, particularly if your hike runs longer than planned. Similarly, staying well-hydrated is important, as a lack of water can quickly lead to dehydration, fatigue or more serious issues.

  1. Sun cream:

As the weather warms up and the sun shines brighter, it’s easy to get caught out by sun exposure on a hike. To avoid sunburn and heat stroke, make sure to pack a high-factor sunscreen.

  1. Headlamp:

A headlamp is a vital piece of safety gear when hiking, because even if you don’t expect to be out after dark, delays or unexpected situations like getting lost or injured can leave you needing light to find your way safely.
