Mac in a Sac is delighted to continue as the title sponsor for the Mourne Mountain Marathon. Entering our third year of sponsorship, we remain passionate about supporting an event that aligns seamlessly with our ethos of facilitating adventure.
The Mourne Mountain Marathon is not your average 26-mile marathon. The event is a 2-day test of endurance, navigation, and mountain skills.
At the start of each day, teams of two are presented with a route card listing a number of control markers, which are identified by 6-figure map references. Teams must visit each control in the prescribed order, but may choose their own route between each marker. A feature of the event is the overnight camp at which all teams must be self-sufficient with all necessary supplies being carried throughout the two days of competition.
The event utilises the unique terrain of the Mourne Mountains for the marathon, with the course planners working hard each year to include lesser-discovered areas.
The Mourne area is recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Located in the south-east corner of Northern Ireland, where the mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea. It covers an area of 57,000 hectares, encompassing the Mourne Mountains and the uplands of Slieve Croob. The AONB has a wealth of natural, built and cultural heritage and provides stunning vistas of the landscapes and seascapes. You will find beautiful beaches, sand dunes, rocky coves, lakes and reservoirs. The beauty of the landscape lies in its diversity.
