As conversations grow around the right to roam policy in the UK

And access to the great outdoors, like the campaigners pushing for the right to roam on the riverbanks. One thing remains clear: people need nature more than ever. So many of us now spend our days indoors and online. Therefore, finding ways to reconnect with the outdoors is essential for our physical and mental wellbeing. PrimusSilva, the Swedish experts in outdoor equipment, firmly believes the outdoors should be accessible and enjoyable for everyone. The brand actively supports national outdoor initiatives and educational programmes. They empower people to explore responsibly, which is at the heart of Silva’s mission.

Neil Yoxall, Outdoor Enthusiast, Experienced Hiker, and UK & Ireland Sales Manager for Primus-Silva comments on the matter: “In a world where many people are staying indoors and focused on their screens, it’s more important than ever to encourage people to get outside. Fortunately, there are already a number of excellent resources and outdoor venues doing just that. Plas y Brenin, the national outdoor centre which Silva proudly supports, inspires and encourages people to get active in the outdoors. The Ordnance Survey and the Peak District’s Miles without Stiles provides brilliant tools and routes to help people explore safely, not to mention the Outdoor Industry Association which plays a key role in promoting the physical and mental benefits of the outdoors.”

With access to the outdoors in mind, Neil provides advice on how to look after these natural spaces: “Wild camping is all about the thrill of immersing yourself in nature, but it does come with responsibilities. It’s important to know the rules. Wild camping is currently banned in England and Wales, aside from the Dartmoor National Park in Devon. However, it is permitted in Scotland under the right to roam, as long as it’s done responsibly. Thus, the method to getting the most out of it is arriving late, leaving early, and taking care not to disturb anyone or anything.

Always follow Leave No Trace principles and make sure you’re well-prepared with the right kit and a clear plan. When done respectfully, wild camping can be a truly rewarding way to experience the outdoors. As you don’t have to pay for your pitch in order to camp, this is a financially accessible activity. Finally, we need to keep making outdoor activities feel accessible and achievable for everyone. With the right education, equipment, and encouragement, the outdoors really can be for all.”

As the discussion continues, Primus-Silva believes that exploring responsibly, and with the right equipment, will help more people rediscover the joy, freedom and wellbeing that only the outdoors can offer.
