Eddie Bauer Microtherm Freefuse Stretch Down Hooded Jacket

It hasn’t exactly been down jacket wearing weather recently. However, in a damp and drizzly Wales last weekend it did come in useful! And with winter on its way it was a good time to try out the Eddie Bauer Microtherm Freefuse Stretch Down Hooded Jacket.

The jacket features FreeFuse construction. Traditionally, inner and outer layers of fabric are stitched together and then quilted with additional stitching. But this jacket is made with a single sheet of fabric that’s folded over and woven together in discontinuous channels to hold the down. This cutting-edge technique saves weight, maximizes breathability, helps reduce cold spots, and minimizes down migration.

I found that it kept me warm and the wind out. It had a comfortable fit and the nylon/spandex stretchshell allowed ease of movement, which was pleasant for a hike in the hills. Too be honest it was a little too hot for the conditions and I had to take it off every now and then – but that wasn’t a problem because a nifty bit of design work means that it can be packed away into its left-hand pocket. Also, weighing in at 16.5 oz it wasn’t a hinderance. However, when the sun snuck behind the clouds, the rain started to come down and the wind pick up it was great!

With the rain coming down that’s when the StormRepel DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish came into its own, water off a duck’s back (well it is filled with either duck or goose down!).

The jacket boasts three outside zipped pockets, more than enough to hold those essential bits of kit that you need quick access to.

Eddie Bauer says that the jacket is designed to be worn over base-layers and lightweight mid-layers. It is an athletic fit, close to the body, which helps with trapping in warm air. However, if you prefer a roomier fit to your jacket you might want to try one size up.

All in all, a great jacket for the hills, mountains or even just around town.
