Women’s Gear Award #she is outdoors becomes more sustainable

Registration for the WOMEN’S GEAR AWARD #she is outdoors – the first European award for outdoor sports products for women – is now open. This year, the award takes another step towards sustainability: starting this edition, the submitted products must be PFAs free. This criterion also applies to laminated products, which must be PTFE-free.

#she is outdoors has always stood out for its ecological orientation: since the first edition of the award in the summer of 2021, there has been a prize for the most sustainable product, in addition to the Overall and Category Winners, which will also be awarded this year.

However, the decision by the Netherlands and Germany, with the support of Norway, Denmark and Sweden, to submit a restriction proposal to cover a wide range of PFAs uses has prompted the award’s expert jury to make the event even more sustainable. In the light of the scientific consensus on the environmental and health risks associated with this type of chemical, the WOMEN’S GEAR AWARD jury members decided to exclude products containing PFAs from the list of participants.

Products can still be submitted until May 6 in SEVEN categories: Outdoor Professionals and Expedition, Camping, Hardware, Footwear, Apparel, Bike and Urban Outdoor. The entry fee for one product is 700 euros; discounts are available for multiple entries. The awards ceremony will take place in July 2022 at a live-streamed hybrid event.

About the award and why we need it

“Women have come a long and difficult way in the Outdoor industry. We have snuck out of the house and climbed steep peaks wearing long skirts – no one has talked about it publicly. We had role models, like Lynn Hill, the first person to free climb “the Nose” in 1993. Today, many girls and women are free to enjoy outdoor adventures, just as men have always done,” said Jana Erb.

Women’s gear has also evolved, from floral prints on rain jackets to specially tailored women’s backpacks, clothing, women’s hiking boots and all the other wonderful things we know and use every day. Women have come a long way – but they’re not there yet. It’s time to stop “adapting” men’s products and start designing women’s products specifically.

“Someone might object, ‘Another award! Do we need that?’ We believe we do: brands can tell stories that inspire girls to climb impressive peaks, they can support women who travel long distances and traverse unexplored terrain. Outdoor brands and magazines can pioneer technical gear for women. Our goal is to advance the technical aspects of outdoor products for women beyond floral prints and ‘pink it and shrink it’ marketing,” added Miriam Mayer, the award’s co-founder.

Jana Erb and Miriam Mayer are photographers and digital creatives from Munich. After several years of experience in the outdoor industry, they decided to do that one thing that has always been missing in the industry: The very first WOMEN’S GEAR AWARD, where only outdoor products for women can be submitted.
